Diabetic Retinal Exams

Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable vision loss in working-age adults, and diabetic retinopathy typically has no symptoms until it is advanced.

Annual dilated retinal exams with imaging catch changes early, when treatment is most effective. We report results directly to your family doctor and endocrinologist.

Common questions

How often should I be examined?
At least once a year for most people with diabetes, or more often if changes are found. Your doctor will set the right interval.
Is the exam covered by MSP?
Yes. Medically necessary diabetic eye exams are covered for patients with diabetes in BC.
What if retinopathy is found?
Early disease is monitored closely; advanced changes are treated with injections or laser, coordinated with retinal specialists as needed.
